Does the language we speak shape the way we perceive the world? In its strongest form, the idea that language determines thought has been largely discredited. Speakers of languages lacking a word for a particular color can still perceive that color perfectly well. Nevertheless, more nuanced versions of the hypothesis have found intriguing empirical support.
